Heading out for a drive is a good way to pass the time, but did you know that there are some roads in Florida that are more dangerous than others? Florida has some of the most dangerous routes in the United States. It’s worth learning more about these roadways and deciding if there are ways you can avoid them, so you don’t put yourself at a higher risk of being involved in a collision.

Some of the most dangerous roadways in Florida include:

  • State Route SR-40
  • State Route SR-809
  • State Route SR-60
  • S. Highway US-192
  • Interstate I-4

These are just five of the dangerous roadways in the state.

What makes these roads so dangerous?

Looking at information from the National Traffic and Highway Safety Administration, you’ll find that these roadways have the greatest number of fatal accidents per 100 miles.

State Route SR-40

State Route 40 makes up around 92 miles of roadway in Florida. There were 23 fatal accidents per 100 miles based on 2019 data from the NHTSA.

State Route SR-809

State Route 809 is another dangerous road. It’s slightly more dangerous than SR-40, because it had 24 fatal crashes per 100 miles.

State Route SR-60

Passing through Tampa, State Route 60 is also a dangerous highway. At 161 miles long, it has around 25 fatal crashes per 100 miles.

U.S. Highway US-192

U.S. 192 is highly traveled by tourists as it passes through Lake Buena Vista, Kissimmee and St. Cloud. Even though the roadway is only 75 miles long, it had 75 fatal crashes per 100 miles.

Interstate I-4

Interstate I-4 goes from Tampa to Orlando. At 132 miles long, it had 27 fatal crashes per 100 miles. Both it and U.S. Highway 192 are the most dangerous routes in the state.

Many of the crashes happening in these areas result from distractions, people unfamiliar with the roadways, pedestrian incidents and other factors. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings when you drive and to avoid these dangerous routes if and when you can. Reducing traffic on these routes may help minimize the number of fatal crashes.
