Left-hand turn results in motorcycle crash near Interstate 275

It’s an unfortunate truth that many motorcyclists are injured because others aren’t paying attention or looking for them on the roads. Take, for example, a case out of St. Petersburg in which a motorcyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by another vehicle on Roosevelt Boulevard N.

According to the report from the scene, the driver of the 2008 Mercedes sedan, a 22-year-old man, was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto I-275. The man’s vehicle entered into the motorcycle’s path, and the 30-year-old motorcyclist could not evade the sedan. As a result, he collided with the vehicle’s right side.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries.

Left-hand turns are a danger for motorcyclists

It may be surprising, but many of the crashes that involve motorcyclists are a result of drivers pulling into the motorcyclists’ paths. A driver may think that the motorcyclist is traveling slower than they truly are, or they may not notice them coming towards them. Regardless of the reason, the driver making a left-hand turn then cuts off the motorcycle’s route, resulting in a T-bone collision.

Crashes like this are extremely dangerous for motorcyclists and may be hazardous to drivers and their passengers as well. Unfortunately, motorcyclists have little protection against this kind of impact, so severe injuries are common.
