Jogging is one of the easiest ways to stay in shape. You can do it for free, and spending just 30 minutes or so per day on the roads around your house can really whip you into shape. You don’t need to spend hundreds on a gym membership to get fit.

However, there is one problem: It gets boring. This is especially true as your runs get longer and you start spending an hour or more running. To combat this boredom, many runners put on headphones and stream music from their phones while they run. This can help you pass the time, but it does increase your risk of injury.

Missing the warning signs

The trouble is that wearing headphones can decrease your awareness of what is happening around you. It muffles the sounds, adds a level of distraction, and means that you may not know if a driver has made a mistake and is about to hit you.

For instance, if you’re running through a crosswalk and a driver doesn’t see you and turns left, you won’t hear the rev of the engine. If you’re looking in the other direction, you’ll have no idea the car is there and no ability to avoid getting hit.

Of course, you’d be right if you said that the accident that the driver caused wasn’t your fault. It’s not. If you’re legally crossing the road, that driver is still liable, even if you were distracted at the time by your headphones. This advice can simply help you avoid getting injured, which is always the main goal. If you do get hurt when a driver makes an error on the road, you may be able to seek financial compensation for your injuries, medical bills, lost wages and much more.

Driving in Florida can be a challenge, especially at intersections. It is vital that you stay safe and other road users should not endanger you in a reckless manner. If you have been hurt because of someone else’s driving, make sure you explore your legal options.
