Traffic and tourism both sharply declined in 2020 for a number of reasons, but fatal car crashes, motorcycle wrecks, bicycle and pedestrian accidents stayed steady or increased all over the country.

Despite an early dip in April of last year, the rate of serious and fatal accidents quickly returned to “normal” in Florida.

What do the statistics say about fatalities in Florida?

In 2020, there were a total of 341,331 crashes in this state. Only 140,261 of those resulted in injuries. Among those statistics are the following:

  • 3,104 wrecks caused fatalities, and a total of 3,347 people died
  • 212,535 people suffered non-fatal injuries
  • 5,949 bicycle accidents led to 163 fatalities
  • 8,038 motorcycle wrecks led to 519 deaths
  • 8,106 pedestrians were involved in wrecks, and 714 died

While the data is still considered preliminary, Florida’s accident rates are very sobering, indeed.

What can you do to stay safer on the road?

Statistics aren’t much good unless you know how to use them. With the high rate of crashes and fatalities in Florida, it’s a good idea to make the following safety habits part of your routine:

  • Don’t drive while tired. That can reduce your reaction times and cause poor judgment.
  • Put away all distractions. Mute your phone, don’t fiddle with the radio and put down your coffee or lunch while driving.
  • Watch your speed. Observe the speed limits, and slow down when there’s a lot of traffic or bad weather.
  • Be kind. Don’t be an aggressive driver and don’t let aggressive drivers engage you. Yield the way if someone is determined to get around you.

Despite your best efforts, you can still end up in a serious collision. A loved one might even be killed by a negligent driver. While money can never restore your good health or your loved one to you, a wrongful death claim can help you hold the guilty party liable for their actions.
