Do boaters have speed limits in Florida?

One of the main things that new drivers are taught is that speed limits are a key aspect of driving a car and must be adhered to at all times. Speeding is still rampant and causes many accidents, of course, but the laws are known.

Boating, on the other hand, often feels like a free-for-all. People go just as fast as their boats can go or as slow as they’d like. Are there any speed limits on the water in Florida?

Certain areas do have specific limits

In a general sense, on the open water, there are no speed limits. However, certain areas do have limits that boaters need to know and follow.

The most common example is a no-wake zone. This means the boat has to be traveling slowly enough that it doesn’t create waves. These are common in harbors and marinas, as well as around swimming areas.

Some places also have limits that look much like those you’d find on the road. They could be set at 25 or 35 miles per hour, for instance. This is done for various reasons, including keeping people safe, protecting water-based wildlife and maintaining the environment.

As with driving, speeding in a boat can cause accidents. Boats are much harder to slow down than cars, due to the lack of brakes, and an aggressive operator may not be able to avoid a crash. Those who are injured by a reckless boater need to know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
