Brain swelling could lead to death long after an accident

Just because someone survives a car accident, a fall from a ladder at work or some other traumatic event does not mean it won’t eventually prove to be fatal. Depending on the scope of the injuries, they could pass away days or weeks after the incident.

Medical professionals note that delayed trauma can happen after an impact. The brain swells, which crushes it up against the inside of the skull. This pressure then reduces blood flow, meaning that less oxygen gets to these cells. A long enough time without proper oxygen can lead to cell death and deterioration. Experts also add that these types of secondary injuries, which may happen when in the hospital, are “often more damaging than the primary injury.”

Remember that swelling takes time. In the immediate wake of the accident, the brain has largely remained the same and all of the cells survived that impact. As swelling happens in the hours or days after the crash, though, more damage is being done the entire time. Without any room to expand, the brain can only swell so much before permanent damage and even death occur.
