As a male driver in your 20s, people may assume it was your fault if you were in a car crash with someone older. People who did not see the collision may think you were driving too fast or driving recklessly. Or they might believe you were distracted, messaging your friends, speaking to your girlfriend on the phone or adjusting the bass on your speakers.

People might not realize that once people hit 20, there is a significant reduction in the likelihood they crash compared to when they were teenagers. A 2017 report by the Research Brief worked out the number of crashes per million miles driven according to age groups:

16 to 17-year-olds: 1,432
18 to 19-year-olds: 730
20 to 24-year-olds: 572
25 to 29-year-olds: 526

The numbers drop further to less than 330 accidents per million miles driven for anyone aged 30 and 79. So, while as a 20-year-old you are statistically more likely to crash than someone older, the numbers show people should be much more worried about teenage drivers, not you.

There are safety advantages to being a young male driver too. As a 20-something man, you are less likely than a 30-year-old woman to be distracted by a crying baby. You are also less likely than a man in his 50s to have failed to see a motorcyclist or misjudged an oncoming vehicle’s speed due to dwindling eyesight and hearing.

If you are in a car crash, seek legal help to prove the accident’s actual cause and fight for your right to compensation. Just because you are young and male does not mean you were at fault. Each case needs to be judged independently and without prejudice.
