Motorcycles have a smaller visual profile than passenger vehicles and trucks, which makes them more vulnerable to accidents.
It is important to know some of the common causes of motorcycle accidents so you can take steps to minimize your risk of a serious injury
Common causes of motorcycle accidents
According to Ride Apart, here are some common causes of motorcycle accidents:
- Corners: Taking corners on a motorcycle can be a dangerous proposition. A common cause of accidents is when there is gravel, snow, ice or rain on the road while taking corners.
- Lane changes: During changing lanes a motorcycle driver is vulnerable. Many vehicles have blind spots, which are areas where the mirrors do not display all the necessary information. Changing lanes and passing often puts motorcyclists in harm’s way.
- Front brakes: Unlike other vehicles, motorcycles have two braking systems, the front and back brakes. When applying pressure to the front brakes only, the momentum of the motorcycle can pull the rider forward and, in extreme cases, make the back tire lose contact with the road.
- Car doors: When parked cars have lined the streets of a city or residential area, there is the danger that a driver or passenger will exit the car and cause a motorcycle driver to collide with the open door. The consequences can be devastating.
- Intoxication: The final, and most common, reason that motorcycle drivers are in accidents is that they were intoxicated. After leaving a social gathering, it is important to not make the fatal mistake of getting on a motorcycle if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
There are numerous reasons why motorcyclists find themselves in an accident — and you can limit your risks but you can’t totally erase them. If involved in a motorcycle accident, remember that there is help available. Talking with a legal advocate can help to ensure that your rights are protected.
